CES 2007: Exciting new products are announced, to exciting not to mention them here: we saw the largest LCD TV to date, but also the smallest PC you can imagine. OQO model 01 was released about three years ago, and it received some mixed reviews at the time. OQO is out now with their new model, the 02, with substantial improvements. Sony came out with an upgraded model of their UX series, dedicated for the US market, that features a hi-speed low power consumption 32 GB SSD. We are still to see some real speed tests to see how the two computers perform. More connectivity features are always welcome for an ultra portable. 3G or even HSDPA would be really handy, not just for internet or email browsing, but also for IM or VOIP usage. It is largely available with many much smaller smartphones, I can’t see the reason for not being included here.
OQO Model 02: I personally wished OQO did not include EV-DO and force people to use Sprint (I do need to look into this). If they just included HSDPA instead, you could get higher speeds and it would be possible to use with any provider worldwide. I hope I’d see both CDMA and GSM versions in the near future. This thing looks like a great second computer. I wish they would offer a version with SSD, but it will most likely be available in less than a year. Overall design, new black casing and backlit keyboard (with actual keys!) is a serious improvement over model 01.
Sony Vaio UX Premium: Solid State Drive really makes the difference in speed, battery live and weight. It also makes a serious difference in price. The UX and OQO would virtually sell for the same price if it wasn’t for the SSD. Happy to see the more stylish black Japanese version being avaialble both in US and Europe. Too bad they dropped the Compact Flash slot; it would have been useful for SLR camera users (like me) that already have several CF with their cameras.
